The Krav Maga Team

Borhan

Borhan Jiang – Co-Founder

I am a soldier and martial artist and a warrior; Military and Martial arts are the two pillars of my life foundation. Growing up facing school bullies on daily basis in Taipei, Taiwan, I swore I would learn how to defend myself and protect people around me. I started taking Judo in high school and competed at the provincial level and later learned Tae Kwon Do in University.

In 2002, I enrolled into Canadian Army (Reserve) and have served in many reserve and regular units. In 2006 & 2007, I was fortunate enough to work as a freelance journalist in Israel and it was then that I was first introduced to Krav Maga, hand to hand combat system used by Israeli Defense Force. The principals of Krav Maga match what I have learned in the military using the most effective and simple method to combat any and all dangers. I have found it to be the simplest, most effective form of self defense I have ever learned.

While I was in Israel, I trained under top Krav Maga instructors such as Avi Moyal, Gabi Noah and Zeev Cohen in Netanya, the Headquarters for IKMF. Currently, I am a G2 Level Instructor certified by the International Krav Maga Federation.  In 2010 I also spent time in Taiwan as the head of IKMF Taiwan.
Something I love about Krav Maga is its techniques against used when dealing with firearms and bladed weapons. In order to be the best instructor one can be, one also must understand the weapons themselves. To ensure I have a better understanding of weapons that I may encounter I am also a less lethal weapons instruction from TASER Academy, shooting instructor from Polar Light training Inc and machine gun armourer from US Ordnance Industry.

For now, I have expanded my horizon and study other martial arts such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Tai and MMA. I believe that by learning multiple disciplines it will increase my ability as a fighter and allow me to bring new training methods into my Krav Maga classes.

Jonathan

Jonathan Fader Co-Founder

Since a young boy, I had always been fascinated with the military and martial arts. It was not until the age of 21 when I decided that my career in Occupational Health and Safety was not exactly what I wanted to be doing at this stage in my life. I decided to drop everything and pursue my dreams of learning martial arts and joining the military. I decided because of my heritage that I would like to join the Israeli Defense Force. However from the time I made the decision until the time I moved to Israel it was almost a year. In 2008 I met Borhan Jiang and started training in Krav Maga.

In 2009 I moved to Israel and served almost 2 years in the 84th infantry brigade, 424th battalion called Shaked. During my military service, I also learned military Krav Maga as required by the training. I did tours of duty in both the West Bank and the Golan Heights. I was involved with everything from roadblocks to arrests and riots.

In the summer of 2011, I returned to Canada.   I felt that this was my home and where I had to be. I immediately started training Krav Maga again with both Borhan Jiang and IKMF Master level 2 Marcus Torgerson. I have also trained under Nir Maman of CT707 through his instructor course numerous time and was certified by Moshe Katz of IKI when he was here running seminars. More recently I partook in Lior Offenbachs first North American Instructor Course.

Also shortly after my return from the IDF I began BJJ. Originally I was training under Megaton Black Belt Trevor Clarkson but eventually moved to train under Multi Masters World Champion and Canadas own Scott Boudreau whom gave me my blue belt along with West Coast BJJ and Black Belt Don Whitefield. I have also trained under the likes of Luanna Alzuguir, Lucas Lepri, Megaton, Michael Langhi, Bernardo Faria and Marcelo Garcia through seminars or dropping by their gyms.

In addition, I have dabbled in Kyokushin, Arnis, Kickboxing and knife fighting with Braun McAsh.

I have also continued to maintain my tactical shooting skills via training and teaching.

Josh

Josh Hensman

Josh has had a passion for martial arts since seeing a video clip of Bruce Lee in action as a kid. He first studied Karate and then at University he began to explore Wing Chun Kung Fu and Capoeira.

After arriving in Canada in 2007 Josh moved to boxing and kickboxing, along with renewing his pursuit of Karate.

In 2014 he represented BC at the Canada Karate Championships – a highlight in his sport martial arts career. As a qualified fitness instructor and personal trainer he often found himself working in fitness and recreation environments where martial arts were occurring. This is where he first encountered Krav Maga. Josh was immediately captivated by the practical, easy to learn, and adaptable nature of Krav Maga. This was a martial art that was continually evolving! Josh continues to study Krav Maga through IKI and UTKM. Josh completed his UTKM Assistant Instructor training in Sept 2015 which nearly took him a year to achieve. Josh regularly teaches our kids classes as well as some of our white belt classes. He also is our head fitness trainer and instructor.

Greg

Greg Fuentes

Greg Fuentes started at UTKM over a year and a half ago. He originally found us through the program we offer at Kwantlen Polytechnic University for students and was immediately interested. It became apparent to us that he not only had the physical skill to be a great practitioner but he also had the right skills we were looking for in an instructor. It took him a while but he is officially one of our assistant instructors and it is well deserved.
